Two suspected Bangladeshi smugglers who were killed in firing by the Border Security Force along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Sepahijala district were handed over to their relatives following post-mortem procedures and bilateral protocols, police officials said on Saturday.

The incident occurred on Friday night near Pathariadwar village during a routine border patrol by BSF personnel. According to officials, the troops noticed a group of around 15 Bangladeshi nationals allegedly attempting to smuggle fish fingerlings into Indian territory.

Police said the smugglers allegedly turned aggressive after being challenged by the BSF personnel and began pelting stones at the troops. In response, the security personnel opened fire using Pump Action Guns in what officials described as an act of self-defence.

Two persons sustained bullet injuries during the incident. The injured men were rushed to a nearby health facility, where doctors later declared them dead.

Speaking on the incident, Madhupur police station Officer-in-Charge Ujjal Choudhury said the bodies were later handed over to the relatives through the Kamalasagar Border Outpost in the presence of officials from both the Border Security Force and Border Guard Bangladesh.

Officials stated that all formalities were completed as per established India-Bangladesh border coordination protocols. Authorities also noted that no formal complaint was lodged by the Bangladeshi border force over the incident.

Border regions in Tripura and other northeastern states have frequently witnessed smuggling activities involving cattle, narcotics, fish products and other goods. Security agencies maintain heightened surveillance in these areas to prevent illegal cross-border movement and organised smuggling networks.

The incident has once again brought attention to the challenges faced by security forces in sensitive border zones , where confrontations between smugglers and patrol teams occasionally turn violent.
