Heavyweights Collide: Japan and Qatar Drawn Together for Asian Cup 2027
The road to the 2027 AFC Asian Cup officially took shape on Sunday as Asia’s football powerhouses learned their fate in a dramatic draw that produced several mouth watering contests, including a blockbuster showdown between four time champions Japan and defending title holders Qatar .
Set to be hosted by Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5 , the tournament promises to be one of the most competitive editions in recent memory, featuring rising nations, former champions, and teams chasing long awaited glory.
The biggest talking point of the draw came in Group F , where Japan and Qatar were placed together alongside Indonesia and Thailand . The clash immediately became one of the most anticipated fixtures of the tournament.
Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui acknowledged the challenge ahead, describing Japan as one of the giants of Asian football. Yet, the Spaniard insisted his side would enter the competition with confidence after winning back to back Asian Cup titles in 2019 and 2023.
Hosts Saudi Arabia also face intense expectations. Drawn with Kuwait , Oman , and Palestine , the Saudis will aim to end a long wait for continental success, having last lifted the trophy in 1996. Newly appointed coach Giorgios Donis made his ambitions clear, stating that Saudi Arabia’s target is nothing short of reaching the final and winning the title on home soil.
Another fascinating group sees Uzbekistan and Jordan , both preparing for their maiden FIFA World Cup appearances, battling alongside North Korea and Bahrain in Group B.
Meanwhile, South Korea , still searching for their first Asian Cup title since 1960, were drawn with the United Arab Emirates , Vietnam , and the winner of the postponed Lebanon vs Yemen qualifier.
The draw itself was delayed because of tensions in the Middle East, while one final qualification spot still remains undecided.
With Asia’s biggest football nations now knowing their opponents, anticipation has already begun building for a tournament expected to deliver fierce rivalries, emotional moments, and a new chapter in Asian football history.
